Diaconate education (Church of Sweden lay welfare
worker training) is a professional training of one
year’s duration if taken full-time or of two year’s
duration if taken part-time.
Teaching at Vårsta Diaconic Centre is designed and
developed together with the students, where the
main, common task is to integrate previous
professional competencies and Christian experience
with further knowledge and fresh evaluations of the
Church and the Swedish society. The year of studies
is part of an ongoing, lifelong process of change.
The task of the students is to work together with
teachers, counsellors and supervisors towards a new
professionalism in Church of Sweden diaconic work,
based on own qualifications and abilities, and also
in relation to the other activities of the Centre.
In focus for this developmental process towards a
new professional identity are the following
challenges:
-
the integration of life experience and
professional training to achieve the competence
expected of today’s and tomorrow’s diaconic
workers
-
the in-depth processing of knowledge of life
conditions in the post-modern society from a
Christian perspective
-
the creation and development of new work
processes and models for diaconic work
-
The development of personal talents and
abilities based on the Christian calling and the
creed of the Church of Sweden
After completed training the student may be ordained
as Deacon of the Church of Sweden.
Time demands
The diaconate education can be pursued either for
one year of full-time studies or two years of
part-time studies.
